Today we are reviewing a new play-to-earn NFT game that managed to melt the crypto winter a little at the turn of 2022 and 2023 and rekindle interest in blockchain gaming. We are talking about The Beacon, a fantasy action game with a top-down view and roguelike elements, created on the Arbitrum blockchain. The main feature of the genre is procedurally generated levels: after death, the character is reborn at the starting point, but the world around them has already changed. Replaying the game will not be the same, which means that mechanically memorizing routes and enemies is impossible here.
The game is rendered in pixel graphics, but it does not look outdated. The developers were clearly inspired by retro stylistics, while managing to preserve the dynamics and atmosphere of adventure. Everything feels lively and vibrant — a high-quality example of modern retro fantasy in the spirit of indie games.
At the beginning of 2023, The Beacon was still in development. But in November 2022, the team released a prototype called The Settlement Launch. Despite its modest positioning, the version turned out to be surprisingly playable: it features NFT mechanics, basic gameplay, and monetization opportunities. This small release caused a noticeable stir in the crypto gaming community, which was hungry for new projects. Many even dubbed The Beacon “the bear’s gem” — a hint that the game has become a rare bright spot during a period of market calm.
The plot revolves around a city called Altaris. The player arrives there to help restore and maintain a dying lighthouse — which is where the project gets its name. To achieve this goal, you need to explore dungeons, fight various enemies, and collect resources. Each dungeon is unique, enemies become stronger, and for victories, the player receives NFT items of varying rarity — from common to legendary. They can either be used to strengthen your character or sold on the market for cryptocurrency.
The full version of the game promises three modes: single-player PvE, cooperative PvE, and a social layer where you can interact with other players. The prototype is currently only available in a browser, but the release version will also be available on PC.
At first glance, the project has almost no high-profile partners, but this impression is deceptive. The Beacon is part of the TreasureDAO ecosystem, a platform that develops decentralized infrastructure for Web3 games. TreasureDAO is building a unified space for projects, creating common tools, tokens, and even separate blockchains. In this system, the $MAGIC token is used as the main asset, including in The Beacon. Thus, the game is not an isolated project, but an element of a growing ecosystem that unites decentralized gaming worlds.
You can start playing for free or with an NFT character. The free version is available to everyone, but rewards are limited — rare items are only available to owners of paid characters. To get started, simply go to The Beacon website, click “Play the prototype,” connect your MetaMask wallet, switch to the Arbitrum network, and come up with a nickname. After logging in, your character appears in their own room, which you can furnish over time with items you find. The controls are standard: WASD keys.
The prototype includes three main areas: the dungeon, the tavern, and the player’s room. The dungeon is where you battle mobs, mostly skeletons. By defeating enemies, the player earns points and access to a chest with a reward — an NFT item of random rarity. Owners of free characters can only count on ordinary items, while owners of NFT heroes often receive epic and legendary items that are sold on the market for real money. Already, you can see deals ranging from a few dollars to hundreds — it all depends on the rarity of the item.
The tavern serves a social function. Here you can chat with NPCs and other players. A character named Igor, an old pirate who asks questions about the game’s lore, has become particularly famous. For correct answers, the player receives an additional chest with a reward. However, the pirate does not appear every day, which adds an element of anticipation and excitement.
The items obtained can be used to decorate the room. So far, this is only decorative, but the developers hint that in the future, the interior may take on a gaming significance or economic effect. Already, many players’ rooms look like real NFT galleries.
The main value in The Beacon is the Founding Character NFTs. They give access to all game features and earning opportunities. They can be purchased directly in the game for approximately $40 in ETH equivalent, and the number of such NFTs is unlimited. Owners can customize their characters, change their appearance, and use cosmetic items, while free characters remain standard and unchanged.
The project’s economic model is still in its early stages, but it is clear that NFT characters will form the basis of the future play-to-earn economy. The in-game market is already bustling, and the community is actively discussing the development of tokenomics and the balance between paying and free players.
The Beacon is one of the few examples of Web3 games that have managed to attract the attention of the audience even in a quiet market. The game offers classic gameplay, fair “play and earn” mechanics, and a simple but well-thought-out NFT component. And its integration with TreasureDAO makes it part of a full-fledged new-generation ecosystem. Although it is currently only a prototype, The Beacon already shows what “Diablo on the Arbitrum blockchain” could be like — a game where the process itself remains the priority, rather than speculation around tokens.
